Sections of a Bahujan Samaj Party painted sign along roadway in Mumbai. Photos taken 2011 by the author.
I think that some of the most interesting sign painting in I’ve seen are these long political signs, painted on walls along the roadside. These are three images from the same sign in Mumbai, and I didn’t even manage to capture the whole thing! So many writing styles within one piece, but unified through the blue color. How great are those descending strokes and shadows on संघटन समिक्षा in the second image? Absolutely fantastic!
This sign painting is from the बहुजन समाज पार्टी Bahujan Samaj Party, representing “scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backwards castes”, essentially the historically disadvantaged people, which in reality, is a very large population. You can see the parade of blue elephants on the right side, which is their mascot.
And please try to ignore the urine stains (?) on the bottom of the wall… 🙁
